The Hive

Today I wanted to write about my favorite healthy spot in Santa Monica. Around this time of year, I start feeling a little under the weather. Colder days, end of the year work stress, and a little indulgence at holiday parties leave me feeling less than 100%.  In the past, I ran straight to the medicine cabinet for a quick fix. Now I try to find a more holistic approach to beat the common cold.

The Hive is a small cafe in Santa Monica, CA. I come here ALL the time. They serve fresh juices, smoothies, raw vegan food, and wellness shots. My favorite thing to get is their acai bowls. So delicious! There’s also food for non-vegans too, which makes this a great place to bring my boyfriend.

When I have a cold, my first move is getting their nutrient-packed wellness shots. They are great at relieving cold symptoms and boosting your immune system. My favorite is the Guardian Bee which is made of ginger, lemon, cayenne and bee pollen. If you are vegan like me, ask for no bee pollen 🙂 All these ingredients have massive healing powers!

Ginger is one of the oldest known medicinal spices. It’s a powerful anti-inflammatory, as well as a strong immune booster that fights against germs. Lemon has strong antibiotic properties that helps cleanse and detox the body. Cayenne is high in vitamin C and beta carotene, making it great at fighting colds. Also, the spiciness of cayenne will open up your stuffy nose within minutes! All these ingredients are very alkaline when in the body, and thus, create the perfect cold-busting shot.

Another one of my favorite shots is the Yellow Jacket. This shot includes orange, ginger, turmeric, black pepper and honey (vegans can ask for no honey). Oranges are anti-inflammatory and anti-viral. They are chock full of vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants, including Vitamin C which is a powerful cold fighter. Turmeric is even more potent when it comes to fighting colds. It is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Black pepper adds spiciness to the shot which, just like cayenne, clears up a stuffy nose.

If you come to Santa Monica I hope you get to try The Hive. It is the cutest place and only a few streets from the ocean. Let me know what you think!

If you can’t make it to The Hive you can usually get them at local healthy restaurants OR you can make them at home if you have a juicer. Stay tuned for a future blog post about my favorite DIY wellness shots.
